Arsenic (As)
Arsenic is a natural part of the earth's crust in some parts of the globe and may be found in water, which has flowed through arsenic-rich rocks. Drinking arsenic-rich water over a long period is unsafe and in some countries around the world the health effects are well recognized. Inorganic arsenic is a documented human carcinogen and has been classified by IARC in Group 1. A relatively high incidence of skin and possibly other cancers that increase with dose and age has been observed in populations ingesting water containing high concentrations of arsenic. Arsenic can be removed using either reverse osmosis equipment or by specialty selective ion exchange systems.
